Everyone who works in creative professions has their days when creativity is bubbling and the creative process moves faster than a duracell rabbit on energy drink. Equally, these people will have days when the creative wheels stop turning and everything around them probably feels dull and uninspired. If, or rather when, this happens to you, there are ways to escape the idea drought. In this article, you can read about some concrete tips on how to "coax" creativity out when everything seems hopeless.

Set the mood

Whether you're writing lyrics, a melody or working on a production, the atmosphere in the room is essential to your creative process. Do your best in this moment to increase the coziness factor. Turn down your lights, light some candles if you can, make a big cup of tea or coffee or similar! If you are writing lyrics and melodies, it can be helpful to turn off your computer or at least turn down the brightness of your screen, and sit at an instrument without looking into a computer screen. Having a music program running can be stressful if you lack inspiration.

Change the environment - set limits

It sounds like a cliché but changing rooms can give your inspiration a real boost, whether you are writing lyrics, a melody or producing. Also, try to take as little of your equipment as possible, such as your computer and a keyboard, and sit in your living room, for example. Limiting yourself to a few instruments can be an effective way to get started. For example, start by selecting a virtual synth and browsing through the synth's presets or pulling up a default sound.

Be playful - build your own instrument!

Creating should feel like a game to give you the courage to come up with innovative ideas. Try doing something that you might not normally spend time on. Try sampling a sound from the room when you bang your teaspoon on your coffee cup, or smack your mouth, etc. Put the sound into a sampler and create your own instrument out of it. Make it a fun thing.

Note! Remember to save the audio as a preset for future use.

Listen to music - Make an inspiration list

If you've lost inspiration, it can be useful to set a direction for what you want to create. A good way to do this is to go on Soundcloud or Spotify, for example, and put together playlists of songs known or unknown and listen to a sound to start from.
